WHAT ARE DENTURES?

Dentures are removable appliances which are used as a replacement of missing teeth and tissues. They are the artificial teeth which enable normal functioning of human mouth.

Dentures are of two types – Complete & Partial. Complete dentures are advised when all the teeth are missing, and partial dentures are applied when some natural teeth are missing. They are custom made especially for a set of teeth and gum line.

Complete Dentures and Partial Dentures

Complete Dentures fit over the upper and lower teeth, with the upper covering the roof of the mouth and the lower shaped like a horseshoe. These conventional dentures are removed at night for cleaning.

Partial Dentures replace missing teeth with artificial teeth attached to a gum-colored base, connected by a metal framework. This framework helps keep the denture in place and prevents remaining teeth from shifting out of position.

Types of Dentures

Dentures can be made from porcelain or acrylic resin:

Porcelain Dentures: These provide a natural appearance and blend well with remaining teeth. However, porcelain can break easily if dropped and may wear down natural teeth, making it more suitable for complete dentures.

Acrylic Resin Dentures: Lightweight and easy to adjust, these dentures fit well and facilitate smoother jaw movement.

Procedure for Placing Dentures

  1. Jaw Impressions: The dentist takes impressions of your jaw to evaluate their relationship and check for gaps.
  2. Wax Model: A wax model is prepared to ensure proper fitting.
  3. Final Denture Creation: The final denture is made using the wax model.
  4. Fitting: The patient tries on the final dentures, and any necessary adjustments are made.

Caring for Your Dentures

Proper care is crucial for the longevity of dentures. Here are some tips:

Keep Your Dentures Clean: Brush your dentures with a non-abrasive brush daily. Though artificial, plaque and bacteria can accumulate, causing damage. Remove and rinse dentures after meals if possible.

Overnight Protection: Soak dentures in water or a dentist-prescribed solution overnight. Avoid chlorine-based solutions to prevent weakening. Rinse thoroughly in the morning before wearing them.

Monitor for Issues: Regularly check your dentures for any looseness, slipping, or changes in bite. Visit your dentist for adjustments to avoid infections and irritation.

Do’s and Don’ts with Dentures

Do’s

– Soak dentures overnight in water or a dentist-recommended solution.

– Rinse dentures before wearing them in the morning.

– Brush daily with a soft-bristle toothbrush and prescribed toothpaste.

– Take care of your mouth, gums, and tongue

Don’ts

– Avoid biting hard food with front dentures.

– Don’t brush abrasively.

– Refrain from using toothpicks or sharp objects on dentures.

– Handle dentures carefully to prevent breakage.

– Do not attempt to fix loose dentures yourself; see a dentist.

Myths About Dentures

Eating Difficulties: Initially, you may need to follow a specific diet, but over time, you can eat most foods with proper precautions.

Lifetime Solution: Without proper care, dentures can wear down and lose their effectiveness. Regular maintenance is essential.

Noticeability: Modern materials make dentures look natural and discreet.

Care Requirements: Dentures require the same level of care as natural teeth to maintain oral health.

Self-Repair: Never try to repair dentures yourself. Always consult a dentist for adjustments.

No Dentist Visits: Regular dental check-ups are important for overall oral health and to ensure dentures remain in good condition.

Cost of Partial Dentures

The cost of partial dentures varies based on materials, the number of teeth replaced, and the fabrication process. Additional dental treatments may increase the overall cost.
